TELL EVERYONE ABOUT YOURSELF & WHAT'S GOING ON FOR YOU RIGHT NOW?
My name's Kira Green, I'm 19 years old and currently go to University in Bournemouth in the UK. All of the UK students have been learning online for several months and to be quite honest with you, it's nothing compared to the valuable face to face time we were having before COVID. However, it has meant I've had more time to sit in front of my laptop or computer which means I've written a lot more this year. I'm trying to finish a book I'm working on called, I'll Take Lonely Tonight, and that's where your lovely music came in! I was hitting a bit of a wall with my own book so I thought I'd give your challenge a go. Using external stimuli and starting on something fresh is a definite cure for writer's block - at least in my case.
WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION FOR WRITING?
I usually find my inspiration for writing in pictures, quotes or music. Anything external that makes me feel a strong emotion. Anything I can connect with.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU FEEL YOUR WRITING HELPS YOU?
My writing has always been a way for me to process emotions I couldn't quite understand. We, as humans, have a lot of mixed emotions at once and it can get really confusing if you keep everything inside your own head. So, I try my best to put it onto paper and hopefully allow someone else to connect with those feelings. Writing for therapy has been a huge part of my life and without realizing it, I started quite young. I'd strongly recommend it to anyone with mental health issues.
IF YOU COULD SAY ANYTHING TO A YOUNGER VERSION OF YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
If I could say anything to my younger self it would be not to panic so much. I was always worried about failing classes, worried that people didn't like me, or that I wasn't going to get anywhere in life. The plan was always just to get to university, and now I'm here it's nothing like I thought it would be. Life has a funny way of working around you so as long as you do your best, make the decisions you think are right, you're going to be just fine.
WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WRITING ALONGSIDE THE MUSIC FROM SPIRIT ANIMAL?
My experience with the music from Spirit Animal was very enjoyable. All of Emma's music has this wonderful ability to go through a person. I'm not listening for a specific chord or waiting on a note, it's all about the pace. I was looking for a song that resonated with my particular mood and pace at that time and the one that happened to leap out at me was Jumping Spider. I'm not usually a fan of spiders but in this case it made me think about a web. How we can trap people in a conversation. And that's where this idea of a journalist came in.
DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WISH TO SHARE?
To anyone wanting to write, please do. Now is as good a time as any. You don't need years and years of experience. All you need is the willingness to tell a story. Whether that be through poetry, fiction, non - fiction, script or even verbally! Storytelling is the strongest gift humans have, we've been utilising it since we learnt how to speak. Without the arts, I don't think anyone would've got through the lockdowns in the UK, and now they deserve recognition.
